Gerard McGarry

B.Sc. B.E. M.I.E.I. M.R.D. Chartered Engineer.

Gerard McGarry has long and varied experience in building, business, development and community activity.

His experience of the building sector is from the perspective of both the client and industry; as principal of engineering and development consultancy firm, Gerard McGarry and Associates, he has been responsible for the design and implementation of major building projects in both Ireland and the U.K., this activity included negotiations with contractors and investors, agreements involving financial advisers, suppliers and sub-contractors, project supervision and control of accounts.

He has also experienced the contractor-builder environment, this by the establishment and management on his own behalf of an industrial-building manufacture and contract company which became a major employer operating throughout Ireland.

He has provided business consultancy services to manufactures and was involved in the preparation of business development plans and marketing campaigns.

During the economic slowdown in the 1980s he identified an opportunity to resolve the underdevelopment of the western region, studied for a Master’s in Rural Development, and played a lead role in the long campaign for the introduction of E.U. Structural Funds to the West; the experience was again varied, both as a campaigner on behalf of regional and community interests and also as Chairman of the Official E.U. Structural Funds Monitoring Committee (West Region). He represented the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland on the E.U. Economic and Social Committee in Brussels for a four year period and participated in E.U. policy formation.

He has worked as a consultant on E.U. overseas development programmes and managed and directed a number of E.U. international cooperation and area development projects both overseas and in Ireland.

Gerard McGarry has frequently acted as a professional witness providing expert technical evidence on behalf of litigants, this experience led to a belief that there can be another way, a result acceptable to all parties. He qualified as a mediator in 2006 and offers the benefits of his extensive experience to the mediation process.

He has a strong interest in cultural diversity, tá spéis aige san éagsúlacht chulthúrtha agus chuirfeadh sé fáilte roimh deiseanna feidhmiú as Ghaeilge.
